New Chapters of Life - 2nd Pregnancy

1.5 years have passed since I last posted.

Many things happened in this 1.5 years. Happy things :)

First of all, I was blessed with my 2nd pregnancy.

It was a total surprise! Neither hubby nor I was prepared for a new baby. A pleasant surprise nonetheless.

This was not the easiest pregnancy.

The first trimester was basically me lying on the bed, sick from morning sickness, bouts of flu, sore throat, cold etc.

Then came the easier 2nd trimester.

I decided to bring Cedric for a solo trip to Taiwan. Only me and Cedric. Then we joined Xiaoyi at Taipei, and later on Ah Fen yiyi came to meet us at YiLan.

It was a memorable trip...a blessing that I get to bond with my little man before the arrival of the new baby.

Dear Cedric, mommy love you so so much. I am going miss all the time spent together, with only the two of us...I am sure you would too. Soon, we will have a new friend, new member joining our family. You will have a special someone to share your happiness, sorrow, naughty moments, and great memories together. You and Cayden will be brothers, for life.
台北阳明山,擎天岗, 好美好舒服的一片大草原

台中,清静农场。阿芬姨姨过来农场找我们玩了!

宜兰,吉米公园。谢谢小姨当我们一路上的苦力

I was huge during the 3rd trimester. Having gained at least 18kg, I was 68kg at 38 weeks pregnant.

I didn't have any stretch marks when I was pregnant with Cedric, but developed some at the thigh area this time around. But it's ok. These are the trophies that I won as a mother. Not young, not slim, not perfect, but feeling blessed, contented, and thankful for everything that I have.

Pork Knuckles?

I have been suffering from sore and swollen feet since week 37 of pregnancy.

Some people say when one is pregnant, the body tends to retain more water.

According to babycenter.com, it may also be "due to the growing uterus puts pressure on your pelvic veins and your vena cava (the large vein on the right side of the body that carries blood from your lower limbs back to the heart). The pressure slows the return of blood from your legs, causing it to pool, which forces fluid from your veins into the tissues of your feet and ankles."

So I end up with feet that looks like pork knuckles...

My Pork Knuckles...

The only remedy that I have now is hubby's nightly massage...painful, but syiok!

Oops...I Pinched My Doctor

Went for my 39th week check up recently.

Dr.Siti did an internal / pelvic examination on me to determine my pelvic dimensions and cervical ripeness.

I was told to take off my pants and lie down with my legs spread widely apart...

"Open your legs...open more...more..." The doctor said.

Oh...That's awkward and embarrassing.... Especially with a young nurse looking at me and smiling one kind... I felt like a piece of meat under the spotlight awaiting to be slaughtered... Of course, it's a piece of meat with kaki terkangkang...

"It will not be painful, only a little bit uncomfortable..." The doctor said.

Before I have time to be mentally prepared, she suddenly inserted something inside (probably her hand?) and started the examination.

Ouch...!!! That's not ONLY a little bit uncomfortable, that's VERY uncomfortable and it hurts...!!!

Ouch....

It felt like an electric shock... My whole body suddenly tensed up and my facial muscles cramped together. I couldn't help but to involuntarily squeeze and pinch Dr.Siti's hand as hard as she squeezed her hand inside me...

"Don't pinch me....don't pinch me!" The doctor said, as her facial muscles cramped together as well. :p

After the whole procedure was done, I noticed hubby was snickering in amusement at the corner...

Phew...! I am so glad that it's now done and over with. But this internal exam definitely tops my list of the most uncomfortable procedures for the 9-month maternity follow up!

Summary of my 39th week check up:-

Weight before pregnant: 51kg
Weight at 39th week: 64kg
Baby's weight: 3.2kg
Baby's estimated weight at birth: 3.4-3.5kg
Baby's position: Good, head down.
Cervical dilation: 1 finger = X cm?
Labour method recommended: Natural birth
What to do now: Wait......wait......and wait.........

Sleepless Nights...

During the 3rd trimester of pregnancy, many easy tasks that we take for granted in everyday life become more and more difficult. One of it being...to sleep.

First, it is becoming harder to find a comfortable position to lie down nowadays.

Sleep on the back: the back will be painful after a while...

Sleep on the stomach: you can't...not with a basketball-sized belly...

Sleep side, left (which many say is the best position for the baby and mommy) or right: the not so bad options.

But still, my rib cage muscle will become sore and painful after a while. Sleep left, left rib muscle will be aching; sleep right, right rib muscle will be aching. So when one side is aching, I'll need to turn to another side. And because the big belly always gets in the way, turning myself will always wake me up as I need to use both hands to support the belly and turn...like a turtle on its back.

Secondly, the hot flashes and sweating.

Hubby said I have transformed from a sweetie to a sweatie since I got pregnant, that is I sweat a lot.

Even though the air-con is ON all the time and is set at 22°C constantly, my palms and feet are almost always wet. My naughty hubby will sometimes hold my feet and pretends to smell it, then pretends to get choked and fainted. Sigh...It shouldn't be that bad right...? I always try to cheer myself up by thinking that this is only temporary, and it will go away after the BB is born...

There were nights when I was soundly asleep, but suddenly woke up feeling warm, and found myself soaking wet in sweat. After that, I couldn't seem to get back to sleep anymore, but toss and turn on the bed waiting for morning...

Third, baby kicking, and kicking hard.

I enjoy the times when baby is kicking and moving in the stomach. It tells me that he is doing fine in there, and everything is OK.

But if the naughty BB is kicking hard when you are trying to get some sleep, that gives you sleeplessness. Still, sleeplessness is better than worrying whether he's doing ok or not.

So BB, continue kicking, swimming, and dancing whenever you feel like it.

Forth, hyperactive mind and vivid dreams.

I can remember my dreams quite well nowadays. I will try to keep remembering it for a little longer, so that I can tell hubby when he wakes up in the morning. Some dreams are about ordinary daily life events, but many are scary nightmares.

I guess maybe I think too much...or worry too much about the soon-to-arrive BB.

With the due date just around the corner, I can't help but to have a sense of insecurity that many things are still not ready...the preparation, my work, my study, the labor process, the confinement, the parenthood...all these question marks are frequent visitors of my hyperactive mind now...

Fifth, the frequent peeing.

Luckily my frequent peeing "problem" is still at a bearable level. Most of the nights I only need to visit the loo once or twice. The real problem is how to get back to sleep after that with the above mentioned hyperactive mind...another long, cool night...

Some say pregnancy insomnia is nature's way to prepare the mothers for those sleepless nights with the newborns. Perhaps! Few days ago I woke up at 4am then toss and turn. Then it became 3am, and today i was already wide awake at 2am.

Thinking of the many sleepless nights yet to come, I salute all mommies who have successfully gone through the toughest stage, and all mommies who are going through it. To those expectant like me who are awaiting to welcome the babies, gambate!

2nd Maternity and Children Expo, Midvalley (18 - 20 November 2011)

This is a super busy and exhausting week...

Hubby got to work over the weekend, and I have been working extra hard trying to settle most of my works before coming too near to my due date.

Despite the hectic schedule, we somehow managed to squeeze 1 hour each on 18 Nov (Friday) and 19 Nov (Saturday) to visit the 2nd Maternity and Children Expo, which was held from 18 - 20 Nov 2011, at Midvalley Exhibition Centre. We have been looking forward to the expo for some time, as I was hoping to wrap up our final round of BB products shopping and to complete all items in our shopping list during this expo.

Entrance of the 2nd Maternity & Children Expo, Midvalley

Our Friday visit to the expo was more like a survey trip. We had a quick walk around the exhibition halls, survey the prices of items we were interested in, and filled in some registration forms to redeem the free gifts.

MAM gift voucher for a free soft pacifier, but we were told it was out of stocks on both Fri and Sat despite being there quite early. I wonder whether there is really any free pacifiers given out by MAM or just a marketing trick to attract customer traffic to their booth?

On Saturday morning, after our Teppanyaki brunch, hubby and I again visited the maternity expo, with a good idea in mind of what to buy after the initial price survey.

From Friday's survey, we found that most of the major items that we planned to buy were priced higher than we expected even after the expo discount. For example:-

Brand Item Expo Price (RM) Normal/Internet Price (RM)
Medela  Medela Mini Electric Plus Breast Pump 599.00 520.00 (from Periwinkle)

599.00 (from Littlewhiz)
Medela  Medela Swing Breast Pump 699.00 679.12 (from Littlewhiz)
Combi  Combi Urban Walker Stroller >1K 899.00 (from Littlewhiz)

Initially we planned to purchase a car seat from the expo. But there were not many booths selling or displaying car seats, and the choices of brands and modals were limited, so no car seat from the expo this time.

One of the items that I think was selling at very good price was Mammy Poko Diapers. Normal price without discount is RM38.90, Giant's current promotion price is RM36.99, and it's selling at RM25 at the expo (for Size NB and S) with 1 FREE bolster for the purchase of every 2 packs of diapers. To look for the Momy Poko booth, simply scan around the exhibition hall for the longest queue.

About 20 people queuing in front of us at the Momy Poko counter

Some of the Autumnz breastfeeding accessories were also selling at a discounted price:-

Brand Item Expo Price (RM) Normal/Internet Price (RM)
Autumnz Electric Steam Steriliser  152.00 175.00 (from Littlewhiz)
+ Home & Car Warmer Combo
Autumnz Breastmilk Storage Bottles  27.00 38.90 (from Littlewhiz)
- BPA Free (10 packs)
Autumnz Zip Lock Breastmilk Storage Bag  ~9.00 10.30 (from Littlewhiz)

(25 bags) *12 oz*

At the end of our 1-hour shopping, despite being a little disappointed with the price and variety of products offered at the expo, we left with a handful of diapers and breastfeeding accessories. But the quest to complete my BB shopping list continues...

Hmmh...maybe tonight I can start surveying for the next breast pump and car seat megasales...

Producing Intelligent Baby?

It is not uncommon nowadays to hear people comments:"Your baby SURE will be very intelligent since you are studying while being pregnant."

Well oh well, Baby Cedric has been attending LLB lectures with me from day 1. He went for Part II exam with me last year when he was the size of a peanut, and has since been promoted to become a senior in college.

Now we are doing our CLP and attending lectures together almost everyday. I have no plan to stop this routine yet, and wish to continue going to classes for as long as possible, perhaps until the very last moment before labour if possible.

Books that BB and I have to digest

So people I meet in college and those who know that I am studying always throw this joke, that BB Cedric will be a smart boy because he has been learning law since the first day of his life.

Is it true that a baby will be smart if listening to lecture often? I am not sure...

Sometimes he will move very actively during lecture, kicking, dancing, swimming and doing all kind of dramas. I notice this is especially true during my Criminal Procedure and Evidence lectures, when he can listen to many stories about criminals, police, prison, court etc. Is he excited about these stories? Or is he bored? Will he actually grow up to be a good lawyer or a great judge? I am wondering...keep wondering...and imagining...

To my lovely Cedric boy, I just want you to know that mummy always love you no matter what you grow up to be...you can be a lawyer, a judge, a doctor, a businessman, a writer or whichever career you choose.

But one thing very important that mummy hope you will always remember...That no matter what you do, always try to keep a kind and sincere heart, be true to yourself and true to your conscience. Daddy and mummy will be proud of you as long as you do it the best way you can. Deal?

Pregnancy Photography, by Terrance Siew

I am a relatively simple person. I like my life to be simple, easy and hassle free.

So when hubby and I got married, we did it in a simple way - by skipping all the ceremonies. We did not have any dinner functions, no traditional Chinese ceremonies, no wedding photo shoot session etc. What we have is a marriage registration certificate from Putrajaya and a life-long commitment "to love and to cherish...until death do us part".

For our first baby, we have decided to make things simple as well. Simple clothing and preparation to welcome BB, minimal Chinese pregnancy superstitions, minimal Chinese traditional confinement practice etc.

But one thing that we find important is for us to capture this beautiful experience through a lens, so that we can have some photos to share with BB when he is older, or to share with each other when our hair turns gray one day...So when hubby volunteered to be my maternity photographer, I was more than happy to be his model for the 2 days sessions.

I like the simplicity of the photos. Just like life, sometimes the simpler the better...

Family Parking Spaces: Who can Park?

Have you noticed this special parking sign board before?

Family Friendly Parking Space, IKEA
It is quite obvious from the picture: a man, a woman, and a kid and stroller. Yes, this is a "family parking" space, specially designated for the convenience of families who come to shop at IKEA. It is very kind and considerate of IKEA to have provided such parking spaces that are close to the store entrance, as I can imagine the struggles parents with young kids have to go through before they can get into the store.

But do you know that family parking area is also designated for expectant mothers?

Now that my stomach is getting bigger, I am very pleased to know that the convenience of these family parking lots is also extended to pregnant ladies.

It was a crowded weekend at IKEA.

Hubby and I were in the car trying to find an empty parking lot, when we noticed the car in front of us driving out from the family parking area. Yeah! Finally a spot to park...and it's even better that it's close to the entrance.

When hubby was reversing our car for a reverse parking, suddenly a security guard rushed out from don't know where and stood in the parking lot, yelling to us: "No, No, No parking!".

And before we could react, we saw the Nepali guard directing another car behind us to park at this family spot. It was a car with a young kid.

Hubby went down from our car, trying to explain to the guard that there's a pregnant lady in the car (that's me :p), why can't we park? The guard with his very bad attitude, just yelled "No No No - Family!" When we tried to explain further, he simply ignored us and walked away. At the end, hubby requested to speak to his manager to make a complaint. Luckily the manager handled the issue in a fairly professional way. Even though our shopping mood was slightly affected, it was not totally spoiled.

I think in the future if IKEA were to allocate parking lot for expectant mothers, maybe they should change its sign board to include the picture of a pregnant lady to avoid confusion.

Or should I suggest IKEA to provide better training to their security guards so that they at least understand the meaning of each parking sign board?

My Dear Baby Products Warehouse Sales (26 Oct - 7 Nov 2011)

11 weeks before the arrival of our BB boy, hubby and I have got our shopping list ready, and are half way through our preparation to welcome the little one. I love to do BB shopping with hubby. It is like treasure hunting, every month we will buy something for BB, and I'll make sure I keep hubby updated of any BB product sales whenever there's one.

This month, one of the bigger sales is the My Dear Baby Products Warehouse Sales at Puchong, from 26 Oct to 7 Nov 2011.

After enjoying our Dim Sum brunch at Taiji Dim Sum, Puchong, hubby and I headed to My Dear Warehouse around noon. I was immediately wowed by the crowd upon arrival! Maybe because it is Deepavali public holidays today, the warehouse was full of people, ie. expecting parents, family with small children running around, workers etc. There was this sourly smell of sweat in the air, but I suppose this is also the smell of parents love to their children. And I too, was determined to join in the crowd and start shopping!

Super crowded!
2-hour queue just to collect our goods

Below is the list of items that we bought by the end of our shopping:-

At home, looking at all my "trophies", I am quite amazed by how determine and patient hubby and I were today! It was raining cats and dogs, we queued for almost 2 hours just to collect our goods, and we got ourselves wet trying to load the goods into the car.

I really appreciate hubby's patience today...and for the delicious dinner that he managed to pull himself to cook for me tonight...I hope our BB boy too, will appreciate our love to him. Really can't wait to meet him in 2 and 1/2 months time!

Glucose ++ In Urine During Pregnancy?

In 2 consecutive antenatal checkups, I was tested positive for glucose in my urine.

It was 1+ when I was 22 week pregnant, then it increased to ++ when I was in week 27. And glucose in urine is one of the indicators of gestational diabetes

According to my gynae, Dr.Siti from SDMC, it is not uncommon for pregnant ladies to develop this temporary type of pregnancy diabetes. Though it is usually not life threatening to both the BB and mother, and the condition generally resolves once the baby is born; but diabetic mummies tend to have bigger babies and higher chance of birth complications. So to make sure, she ordered an OGTT (Oral Glucose Tolerance Test) to check for diabetes.

So how is OGTT performed?

To do the test, I started fasting from 10:30pm on Friday night. On Saturday morning, when I arrived at SDMC with an empty stomach, my first urine and blood sample were taken at around 10:30am.

Then the lab technician gave me a super duper sweeet drink, that after drinking it, I felt like there are 10 butterflies trying to break free from my stomach through my throat...But the lab tech warned that I have to try not to vomit, or else we will have to do the test all over again. So to distract me from my uncomfortable feeling of queasiness, hubby brought me to have a quick shopping at the nearby Carrefour, while waiting for my 2nd urine and blood sample to be drawn at around 12:30pm.

What does the test result mean?

I had 2 anxious days awaiting the OGTT result on Monday. So I did some homework and surfed the net for some clues on how to read the result. In general, the chart below from Lab Test Online shows how to interpret the result:-

The goods news is, despite having glucose traces in my urine, I passed the OGTT and I am not diabetic. What a relief...as I always pray for a healthy body so that I can provide the best growing environment for my BB.

The bad news is, both Dr.Siti and hubby want me to control my sugar intake from now on...to Dr.Siti, that means eating in moderation; but to hubby, that means NO sugar, NO ribena, NO chocolate, and the list goes on...OMG...how my coming days going to be like without my beloved sweets...!?

Prenatal Massage, F.O.C!

There is a famous confinement centre called Peiling Confinement Centre, located near Taman Bahagia LRT Station. My friend Shijia and I went for their confinement talk about a month ago, that's how we got this free prenatal massage voucher as part of the free goodies to all participants.

Free Massage Voucher

I had a bad leg cramp during my sleep last night, and woke up with  stiff neck and backache. So these have become my excuses to pamper myself with a long-awaited and well-deserved massage session. Then I recall that I have this free voucher which has been sitting quietly in my drawer for a month now.

Soul Nibbana is a bungalow type massage centre located beside Peiling Confinement Centre, and if not mistaken, managed by the same management. My massage masseur was a 21 year-old cambodian lady with a wide smile. The 1 1/2 hour massage was quite relaxing and I nearly fall asleep, though it was not really superb. But I know I shouldn't complain much when I'm pregnant, as the masseur needs to be gentler with her touch, and the massage oil used was the unscented type to avoid irritation. And hey, it's FREE!

Overall, I am satisfied with the massage. If not because I have already signed a 7-session prenatal massage package with Veqish Spa, USJ, I would consider getting a package from Soul Nibbana. They charge RM460 for 6 sessions of 1 1/2 hour prenatal massage (worked out to be around RM51 per hour), compared to Veqish Spa who charges RM684 for 6 sessions of 1 hour, and 1 session of 1 1/2 hour (around RM91 per hour).

So ladies, if you are interested to try, I think Peiling is having another free confinement talk during the Deepavali week. I am not sure whether free massage voucher will be given this time, but you can always call them to enquire more.
